The UN Sustainability Developement

How we work with sustainability developement at the Hawaii Nursery

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Countries have committed to prioritize progress for those who’re furthest behind. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls.

The creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources from all of society is necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context.

Goal 3.9

Goal 3 part 9 (3.9)

By 2030, significantly reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from exposure to hazardous chemicals, air, water and soil pollution;

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“At the Hawaii nursery, we are working towards using No chemicals and are well on our way. We recirculate our water and ensure that there is no waste to lakes, rivers, streams, groundwater and the sea. In this way, we contribute to significantly reducing air, water and soil pollution”.

Goal 6.4

Goal 6 part 4 (6.4)

By 2030, significantly increase the efficiency of water use in all sectors and ensure sustainable freshwater abstraction and supply to address water scarcity and significantly reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“At the Hawaii nursery, we collect all rainwater from the gutters in a large outdoor pool. The rainwater collection makes us self-sufficient in the water we use in production. “

“Watering the plants is part of a recirculation process where excess water is collected in smaller pools under the tables and reused several times. This results in efficient use of water consumption

Goal 8.4

Goal 8 part 4 (8.4)

By 2030, global resource efficiency in consumption and production must be continuously improved and efforts must be made to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, in line with the 10-year Framework Programmes for Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns, spearheaded by developed countries.

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“In the Hawaii Nursery, we are aware of waste in production and only use recyclable pots and plastic for packaging. In addition, we recirculate our water so that we do not use more than necessary

Goal 12.4

Goal 12 part 4 (12.4)

By 2020, achieve environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste throughout their life cycle, in line with the agreed international framework[1], and significantly reduce emissions to air, water and soil to minimise negative impacts on human health and the environment.

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“At the Hawaii Nursery, we make a great effort to reduce the use of pesticides. We have an internal system that monitors the level of pests, which means that can quickly deploy control in specific and controlled areas. For many years, we have used beneficial organisms and other biological control remedies and, with good experience of this, we now use almost only biological control.

If we must use chemical remedies, we only use bee-friendly ones. We are very aware of the importance of bees for products our biodiversity in nature.

In addition, we sort all plastic that is also recycled.”

Goal 12.5

Goal 12 part 5 (12.5)

By 2030, significantly reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“We use 100% recycled plastic for all our pots and transport boxes. The plastic can also be handled in waste sorting and recycled again.”

Goal 14.1

Goal 14 part 1 (14.1)

By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce all forms of marine pollution, in particular pollution caused by land-based activities, including marine litter and nutrient pollution.

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“Because we in the Hawaii Nursery recirculate our water in a closed system, the release of fertilizer nutrients to rivers, lakes, streams as well as the sea and groundwater is avoided.

Goal 15.2

Goal 15 part 2 (15.2)

By 2030, global resource efficiency in consumption and production must be continuously improved and efforts must be made to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, in line with the 10-year Framework Programmes for Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns, spearheaded by developed countries.

What we do at The Hawaii Nursery:

“In the Hawaii Nursery, we are aware of waste in production and only use recyclable pots and plastic for packaging. In addition, we recirculate our water so that we do not use more than necessary.

We are also working on various initiatives to ensure more green energy and less CO2 emissions in the future. Specifically, this means that during 2022 we will have district heating in the nursery instead of using fossil fuels.”
